GRfield guide

Charging your GR

Every current GR charges over USB-C with the battery in the camera. That is the simplest route and needs no extra hardware — but it also means the camera is out of action while it charges, which is why spare batteries and an external charger are the common upgrade.

In-camera over USB-C

Plug in and it charges. The GR IV supports USB Power Delivery, though Ricoh notes it is not certified with the USB Implementers Forum logo. A phone charger or a laptop port both work.

A power bank works fine for topping up in the field — this comes up constantly and the answer is simply yes, over the same USB-C port.

External chargers — match the battery, not the camera

The BJ-12 takes two DB-120 cells and Ricoh quotes roughly two hours for an empty one. Both chargers run off USB.

Mains power for long sessions

For interval or tethered work there is an AC adapter kit (D-AC166) that runs the camera from a wall socket rather than the battery.

Before you buy a third-party battery

Battery swelling is the most-discussed GR fault. Reports cluster on the DB-120 but are not exclusive to it, and off-brand cells feature heavily. If a battery is visibly swollen, stop using it and do not charge it. What to do →
