Camera will not switch on, starts inconsistently, or freezes in use
What causes it
- Flat or failing battery is by far the most common cause, including a battery that reads as charged.
- Reports of freezing cluster on the GR IV and are sometimes resolved by firmware.
- A lens jammed part-way can stop start-up entirely.
What to try, in order
Low risk — the steps below are reversible.
- Charge fully in-camera over USB-C and retry; then try a second battery if you have one.
- Remove the battery for a minute to force a full power cycle.
- Check the lens is fully retracted and unobstructed — never force it.
- If it starts but freezes, update firmware before assuming hardware failure.
