Firmware update will not run, or the camera misbehaves after updating
Moderate risk — one of these steps can make things worse if rushed. Work through the steps in order rather than skipping ahead.
What causes it
- The update file must sit in the card root, on a card formatted in the camera.
- A partly charged battery can stop the update starting.
- Some features are gated behind firmware — the GF-2 flash needs a firmware update before a GR III or GR IIIx will use it.
What to try, in order
Moderate risk — one of these steps can make things worse if rushed.
- Format the card in the camera, then copy the firmware file to the top level of the card.
- Charge the battery fully first; do not attempt an update on a low battery.
- Check the current version in the camera menu before and after, to confirm it actually applied.
- If the camera will not power on after an interrupted update, that is a service job, not a retry.
