Ricoh GR III vs Ricoh GR IVx
12 of 14 specifications differ. Everything else is identical on both manufacturer spec sheets.
What the differences mean
- Batteries do not carry over. The Ricoh GR III takes a DB-110; the Ricoh GR IVx takes a DB-120. Any spares you own for one are useless with the other.
- Memory cards do not carry over. The Ricoh GR III takes full-size SD; the Ricoh GR IVx takes microSD. Budget for replacing your cards, not just adapting them.
- This is mainly a lens decision, not a camera decision. The Ricoh GR III is the wider of the two; the Ricoh GR IVx is tighter and sits closer to how people naturally see. Neither zooms — you pick one focal length and live with it.
- The Ricoh GR IVx has the more capable stabiliser (5-axis vs 3-axis), which matters most for handheld shots in low light.
- Top ISO differs: the Ricoh GR IVx reaches 204800 against 102400. Treat the headline number with scepticism — the top stop of any ISO range is a marketing figure.
- Only the Ricoh GR IVx records 4K. If video matters at all, this is the deciding row; if you only shoot stills, ignore it.
- The Ricoh GR IVx has 53GB of internal memory against 2GB — enough to shoot a full day with no card in the camera at all.
- Crop steps differ (Ricoh GR III: OFF / 35mm / 50mm; Ricoh GR IVx: OFF / 50mm / 71mm). These are sensor crops, not a zoom — you lose pixels in exchange for tighter framing.
- Close-focus differs (Ricoh GR III: Normal 0.1m-inf; macro 0.06-0.12m; Ricoh GR IVx: Normal 0.2m-inf; macro 0.12-0.24m). The wider body focuses nearer, which is the usual trade for a shorter lens.
- The Ricoh GR IVx is not released yet, and its specification is the one published at development announcement, which Ricoh says may change. You cannot buy one today.
