GR IIIx now, or wait for the GR IVx?
If you want a 40mm Ricoh GR, 2026 is an awkward year. Ricoh has confirmed that GR IIIx production ends with units shipped in October 2026, along with the IIIx HDF and IIIx Urban Edition. Its replacement, the GR IVx, is a development announcement with no price and no date beyond "Winter 2026 or later".
So the choice is between a camera that is about to stop being made and one you cannot buy yet. Here is what separates them.

Buy the GR IIIx now if…
- You want to be shooting this year rather than next.
- You do not care about 4K video — the GR IIIx is Full HD only, and so is the GR IV.
- You would rather buy a known quantity than a specification that Ricoh says may still change.
- You find one at a good price before stock tightens. Discontinued GR bodies have not reliably got cheaper.
Wait for the GR IVx if…
- You want the better sensor, 5-axis stabilisation instead of 3-axis, and the much larger buffer of internal memory.
- You shoot video at all — 4K is the one genuinely new capability in the GR IV generation.
- You are not in a hurry and can tolerate an unannounced price.
If you already own a GR IIIx, factor in the switching cost. The GR IVx uses a different battery (DB-120 rather than DB-110) and a different memory card format (microSD rather than full-size SD). Your spares and cards do not carry over. What the GR IVx confirms so far →
What nobody knows yet
- Price. Unannounced. The GR IV's launch pricing drew complaints in Europe and Canada, which is the main reason to be cautious about assuming.
- Date. "Winter 2026 or later (planned)" is all Ricoh has said.
- Whether an HDF variant follows. The GR IIIx and GR IV both got one. The GR IVx announcement does not mention it.
